My build and flight video for the DC-6. The DC series of commercial aircraft is by far my favorite. I had been wanting to create an easy to fly, 4 engine plane for a while and this was the result. This plane features some cool new designs that maximize strength while keeping this plane as lightweight as possible. It also has a full retract system, and runs great with four 2212 1400kv motors.
Flies like scale - Fun to Build
The 3D printed DC-6 is about 1/20 scale to the real plane. This airplane uses 4 2212 1400kv motors, has a 1.8m wingspan, and a RTF weight of 3,600grams. It flies just like the real airliner! It has slow and smooth flight characteristics that make for an enjoyable and reliable RC plane experience. Great for a beginner flier.
Getting Started
This plane requires a minimum build plate volume of 200x200x200.
I got to try out the latest from FLSUN for this project. This is their V400, it is a delta style printer that truly prints great quality parts at higher speeds.
Not your Typical Spar
This plane features a "sparless" design. By that I mean you will not need a carbon rod. I designed an integrated spar that is within the wing instead. When the pieces are glued together, the 3D printed spar is whole and the result is an incredibly strong wing.
Retractable Landing Gear
This plane can be flown with a fixed gear or retracts - your choice. My main concern was making these features accessible to as many as possible, so I set the plane up so that you can use the retracts and control all the surfaces on the plane with only a 6 channel transmitter.
Easy to access,less downtime!
I used eight 5x3x10mm magnets to make the hatch easy to open with plenty of room to work. A 3D printed tray holds on to your batteries. For this model, I have flown it on 2x 2700mah 3S batteries and have also flown it on 1x 5200mah 4S. Both work great. RTF weight around 3600grams.
Scale Details and Cooling
I paid close attention to the details of this plane and even visited a DC-6 in person during this project. From the motors to the tail skid. I incorporated the details into the cooling channels and vents on the nacelles to keep this plane cool during flight.
I also made an easy to use tool that allows you to accurately set the depth of your motors into the nacelle.
